Dear students who will take English 110 next quarter

Hello! My name is Youngwook Kim. I took English 110 a quarter before you guys. I wrote many papers during the quarter and although they were kind of hard to write at the time I was writing, I think it improved me with my writing skills. While I am foreign student, my English was not very good. Before taking this class, I was kind of afraid of how I will do with the class because it is the class I have to take with Americans. I had many difficulties when writing the papers. However, the teacher helped me a lot by answering my questions carefully. As a result, although I was not good with writing and I got bad grade for the first paper, I did better for the next one and keep doing great for other papers. There should be some students who are foreigners and afraid of taking English class. I am not going to say this class is easy to take. However, if you try hard and ask questions to teacher, this class would not be very hard. Also, I am not sure that you guys are going to do the same thing but the most of the class were about science fiction and they were really funny. Lastly, the most important thing is the BLOG. We are writing 250 words blog everyday!!! I know it is hard and do not want to write it. However, it is important to improve your writing skills and it is also funny to read your blogs and other students’ blogs. That’s it for my last blog. I hope you guys do your best in this class!!^^

Before taking this class, I thought science fiction is just something that is exciting that people normally see in the movies. Even though I saw a lot of science fiction movies, I thought it was only something that looks cool. However, after finishing this quarter, science fiction is kind of different from what I thought before. I watched almost all episodes of ‘Firefly’, and also watched two movies about science fiction. As we know, it was the same that the story takes places in the space and there are wars between human and human or human and aliens. However, the science fiction stories we saw and read in this quarter were different from other stories like ‘Star Wars’. Although they are not fancy like ‘Star Wars’, they have some serious stories and it was kind of funny to see those kinds of science fictions. The two movies we watched in class were confusing. They were really hard to understand even though I watched all parts of the movie. It might be because they were short. However, for the ‘Firefly’, while I watched almost all of the episodes, it was easy to understand. Also, I wrote many papers about science fiction in the class and it was really hard to write at the beginning of the quarter. However, after writing many papers, I think I can write them better and faster than before. I am not sure that I will have a chance to write about science fiction in my lifetime. It was really great time to do it and I hope I can do it again someday.

Today’s the last blog about anything!!!! You guys did a really good job. I hope you pick a wonderful topic for this blog. As I mentioned in my last blog, I am going to write about what I am going to do for the winter break. As you know, I am going back to Korea for the break and have some good days with my parents, relatives, and friends. While it is only 3 weeks of break, there are not much time to waste. For the first few days, I decided to stay with my parents and visit my grandparent. Then, I think will meet my cousins and friends and go to have some drink. Although I am 19, and I cannot drink in U.S., in Korea, people can drink at the age of 19 years old or above. Don’t worry! I may not drink that much because I am not good with drinking. I think this is it for the first week. For the second week, I might go to Seoul, the capital of Korea, and play with my friends in Seoul. Also, I will go for the skiing. It has been almost 10 years since I went for the last skiing. I hope I do not slip or hit someone. For the last week in Korea, I will stay in Daejeon, where I live in Korea, and just hang around. Whoo… I think this is it for my last blog about anything. Hey guys!! Do your best on the finals and have a great winter break!!^^

It is the last day of class!!! Now we only have final week left in this quarter. Is everyone studying hard for the final?? I hope you do!! However, the thing is…. We are still writing our blogs now!!! We need to study for our finals and these blogs are making me crazy. As you know, writing 250 words everyday was very hard at the beginning of the quarter. But, I do not think writing blogs now is not as hard as before. Although we do not have many things to write about, I can write really fast. We only have 3 more blogs after today’s blog. While we have topics to write about for blog 74 and 75, tomorrow’s blog is the last blog that we can write about anything. I am thinking about what to write for my final blog about anything. I hope I can write some funny things that I still can remember when I get old. Maybe I can write about what I am going to do during the winter break. It is very sad that it is hard to see you guys again. Even though the English class was very hard for me, it was very funny and I hope I can take classes with you guys again. I better study for my final now. I almost did not study at all right now… I hope you guys do your best on your finals. See you and have a great final week and a winter break!!

For today’s blog, I am going to write about my trip to Indiana. As I mentioned in my last blog, I went to Indiana to have a Thanksgiving break with my brother and cousin. Actually, Ohio and Indiana is not that far. However, it took almost 6 hours to get to the Indiana. To get to Indiana, use the flight is the best and the easiest way to go. However, I used a bus to go because it is cheaper than the plane. While it is cheaper, it takes longer to get to Indiana. I used a greyhound bus to go. Early in the morning of the Thanksgiving Day, I took a taxi to get to the greyhound station. I went little bit earlier than the departure time of the bus because I did not buy the ticket. After I bought the ticket, I waited about 2 hours in the station until the boarding. In the bus, I slept the whole time, about 3 hours, until the bus gets to the Indianapolis because I did not sleep at that night. After I got out of the greyhound station in Indianapolis, I took a taxi again to go to the Indianapolis airport. In the airport, I went to the bus terminal to take the limo to get to the Purdue. It took about an hour and half to get to Purdue. While it was hard to sleep in that bus, I got my laptop out and watched movie. When I got off the bus, my brother was waiting at the exit and I went to his house to have a happy thanksgiving day.

I thought we were going to write about the movie we were going to watch in class today. However, we did not watch movie today and we have to write about anything for our blog today. I guess I have to write about what I did during Thanksgiving break. I went to Purdue (Indiana). My brother and cousin are going to college in there. While they were living together, I went to their house to have Thanksgiving Day together. We decided to eat Turkey. However, while the normal turkey is not that tasty for the Asians, we tried to make Asian style turkey. We used lots of garlic and soy sauce to make turkey tasty. And it was the biggest turkey I ever saw in my life. We also baked some corn with butter. Our friend brought wine and other foods. Although all of them were boys (it was really sad…), it was great to enjoy the Thanksgiving Day with delicious foods. My stomach was going to explode after finishing all of our food. After taking some break we went to the Karaoke place (the singing place) and sang Korean, American, and Japanese songs. Even though it was also sad that we were all boys, we had funny times by singing the songs we wanted to sing. After 2 hours of singing, we came back to our home and slept until we wanted to wake up. It was the greatest Thanksgiving Day I ever had. I hope I can have it again next year.

The novel which made me to know that communism is only unavailable theory was Animal Farm which was written by the English author, George Orwell. I was very surprised because it showed contradiction and result of communism well. It is simple summary.
Many animals suffered harsh life on the Manor Farm. However, animals revolutionized against human so they banished human. The two pigs which are Snowball and Napoleon became leader of animals. The most powerful pigs were Snowball and Napoleon. However, they have different thought. Eventually, Napoleon became dictator after he banished Snowball. Also, the animals which followed Snowball were banished. However, life of animals was still harsh. The pigs which follow Napoleon only live well. The slogan is also changed from “Four legs are right and two legs are evil” to “Four legs and two legs are both right.” Pigs and human became very friendly. They trade many things and pigs enjoy it. Life of other animals became harsher than before. They can’t bear it anymore. Eventually, they up rise and banished pigs.
Former communist countries showed same process like story of Animal Farm. Many poor people suffered starving under control of corrupted empire and capitalism. Eventually, people revolutionized and collapsed empire and capitalism. However, result is worse than past. Many people worked hardly and freedom disappeared. Not only former leadership but also people who criticized communism were also killed and sent to prison. Only communist leadership lived well like former royal family and noble people. In addition, when economy situation became poor, they also accept capitalism countries. Of course, it is also allowed to only leadership people. They kept their dictatorship by forcing people continuously. Communist countries became more corrupted and poor. As a result, it was also connected to uprising.
Story of Animal Farm and result of communist countries showed that Communism is just theory. It is unavailable. Although capitalism has contradiction which difference between wealth and poverty, it has opportunity which even common people become wealth class. However, communism doesn’t have it. It only exist corrupted and poor situation. We have to choose capitalism for our future. Although it has contradiction, we have to fix it.

Is nationalism really right thing for our future? Nobody knows how nationalism is dangerous theory. I also believed that nationalism is required theory for my country and people until 5 years ago. However, it was biggest misunderstanding. I usually watched dramas and read historical books which are related to nationalism. They insisted that Korean is holiness people and foreign cultures and people are worst things for Korea. I was too young to understand which one is correct. I can’t understand until now why I accepted that silly theory easily at that time.
However, I noticed that nationalism is for only one group of people. It means that sacrifice of other people is none of business. I started to read history of world. Many theories existed in our history. Imperialism and German Supremacy were good example. When Imperialism existed, many strong countries invaded and made weak countries as colony. As a result, people of weak countries like Asia, Africa, and South America suffered great pain. German Supremacy was worse than Imperialism. It caused Jewish Holocaust and World War II. As a result, the tragedy which more than 50 million people of the world died. Communism is little bit different but they also killed many people by name of nationalism. North Korea always insists nationalism to their people. However, it is only tool which they keep their dictatorship. Also, many people and countries conflicts until now because they still believe nationalism.
We are living 21st Century. We have to live together. Conflicts and hatred between people are remains of past. Nationalism also has to become remains of past. We live in the same world. We have to know it.

Today for my blog, I am going to write about the drama I watched before (House). Nobody denies that it is thankful to live the life no matter how long they will live. However, more important thing is the way of living life to live happily. In this case, it is better to precede transplantation because even though one child can live only two and a half years, the other can live as long as he wants to live. Most of all, the one who can transplant can still live two and a half years and it is more important how he can live as happy as he can. Of course it is wrong to decrease one’s life but it can give more hopes for both his brother and their parents. The approach of this case would be different if he dies right away if the transplantation is proceed but since he still can live even though only for short time, he still has chance to live happily and his brother also has more chances. Most of all, their parents will not lose any of their child right away and can take care both for two and a half years. Life it is mentioned above, the length of life is not important, but how you live effectively and happily. The long life without pleasure cannot be mention as life. Therefore, it depends on a boy how he lives his short life but at least the chance has given to him.

For this blog, I am going to write about the video that I watched recently. Using animal for food or clothes seems to me that it is natural thing that the animals have to go through. In nature, herbivorous eats plants and are eaten by carnivorous. This is a natural relationship and right now, humans are the top of all animals. Like carnivorous eat other animals, humans also need food from animals and the only thing that is different from carnivorous animals is that we have the ability to raise animals just for food and we can butcher and cook. Clothing is also a thing that we need for life. Unlike other animals, we, humans, need clothes to protect our bodies and one of the materials is animal fur. In my opinion, unless we do not overproduce, like slaughtering cows more than what we need for food, using animals for necessities of life such as food and clothes is acceptable. I also agree with using animal in experiments, especially in the medical field. In science, the experiments are the most important thing, and have to be tried on animals before this technology can actually be used on humans. We cannot use humans as experiment just to protect the animal from this unless people do not want any improvements in science. However, nearly all people want improvements and it is impossible to do without experiments. It does not make sense to me that some people are against using animal as experiments, but still want science to be improved for their own life.

Many people think animal experimentation is too cruel for animals. Some scientists had experiments on animals without giving them any pain killers and that led them to death. It may not lead to death, but it gave animal great pain. The cruelest thing however, is keeping the animals alive without doing anything to relieve their pain from the experiments for effective results. According to the Animal Testing Facts, nearly 17 to 22 million animals are used in research every year. This shows that many animals are suffering just because of experimentation. Therefore, some people suggested testing on human cells by using technologies based on culturing cells. Other people also feel cruelty about animal experimentation, because they cannot understand how the people can use pets as lab rats. Since most people treat their pets as family, the animal experimentation for them is like sending their family to experimentation. Another opposing opinion was the doubt about the effectiveness of animal experimentation. The animals and humans are different species, which means that the types of disease they get are different. According to the American Medical Association, the animals and humans share only 1.16% of all diseases that are discovered until now. However, the biggest opposing factor that they argue is that most of animal experimentation is caused by human supremacism. Like humans, the animals also have the right to live and we actually ignore it because we think humans are superior over the animals. Just because they cannot speak does not mean that they do not have any thoughts. All of these opposing factors that they mentioned are reasonable. I hope you guys understand these factors too. My country was suffering horror of the war now. The day before yesterday, Yeongpyeong Island, Northwestern location of South Korea was attacked by North Korea. There was very close to North Korea and one of five islands which Korean and UN armies protected during Korean War. Many small conflicts occurred between armies before but it is first time which island is damaged since Korean War. Not only 2 soldiers but also 2 civilians died. In addition, many houses and public institutions were destroyed. Many residents in Yeongpyeong Island hided in air-raid shelter or escaped to Incheon. Although bombardment between both sides is stopped now, it is still dangerous. Many people thought that war begins. I also thought that war begins at first time which I heard that news.
All of reason which causes this result is South Korean government tried to help North Korea. Of course, purpose was good because we tried to help North Koreans who suffer starving. However, it only made North Koreans became painful than before. I don’t know why South Korean government doesn’t correspond strongly. We supported many food and relief supplies before. Also, we tried to help North Korean economy best by tourism industry. However, the result is this. The past 10 years was meaningless period. If we didn’t help North Korea, they probably would be collapsed. In other words, our effort only helped their army and their leader. We don’t have to help North Korea anymore. If we try to help North Korea, people will suffer serious pain. Corrupted North Korean regime has to be collapsed for peace of Korea. However, stupid leftists in South Korea still try to believe North Korea. How silly it is. Leftists and corrupted North Korean regime are enemies of true Korean unification and peace. We have to reject them first.

Today in class, we finished the second half of BSG (Battle Star Galactica). It was way more interesting than the first half of the story. The scene when the soldier stayed and made others to leave with the space ship almost made me cry because the woman was almost crying and it was very sad moment. The war between cylons and humans was very exciting for the second part of the story. Actually, it is hard to call it a ‘war’ because cylons were keeping attacking the humans and they could not do many things. Humans were keep jumping, it is like warping, and could not attack the cylons. It was really had to find out the cylons that looks similar to the humans. It was hard to understand the scene that a cylon got allergy by staying in some kind of strange air condition. The general found out the he is the cylon and killed him. The war finished by humans moved to the Earth. I don’t know what happened to all of the cylons but I think some are alive. While not all of the cylons are bad guys, I think it is important to have a peace between cylons and humans. Anyway, after watching the BSG, I still do not understand perfectly about this story. Maybe I did not concentrate enough for the story. However, it was interesting story and I want to watch it one more time to understand. I hope there is another time that I can watch this kind of show.

When I was writing about the blog before, I thought writing about anything is easier than having a topic because I had many things to write about in my head. However, while it is almost the end of the quarter, there are not many things to write and I still have to write many blogs about anything. I am out of topics for the blog right now and I hope some people give me some topics to write for my blogs. When I am writing blogs about anything, I always think about what happened when I was young, some news about Korea, and what I did for that day. Writing about when I was young is kind of funny because it made me to go back to those days. However, I cannot remember that many funny moments that I can write for the blogs. Writing about Korea is making me proud because I can introduce my home country that most of the people in U.S. do not know. While there are many differences between U.S. and Korea, I can find out many topics. However, writing about what I did for today is the worst thing to write because my life in U.S. is almost similar every day. So, my blog become strange like what I am doing right now and writing about I do not want to write the blogs and it is too harsh. I think today’s blog is kind of weird too. Anyway, I just finished my blog for today^^ Tomorrow’s blog is writing about BSG, so I have a topic to write!!

Oh my god!! I am stuck with my blog today!!! I do not have anything to write right now. I just ordered the cane’s chicken fingers for me and my roommate. The manager said that the food will be here by half an hour. However, it took almost an hour and the food is still not here…ㅠㅠ And we just got a call from the store and they asked us that the drink is sprite and coke… and also said that they will be here in 5 minutes. My roommate just goes to get the food and I am waiting for him with writing my blog. My roommate just came back and the food looks great!! I think I better pause my blog and eat the chicken fingers first^^ Hey I came back!! The food was excellent. Even though it took me an hour to put the food in my stomach, it was still great and made me full. Ha… now I have to finish my blog for today… and it still has almost 80 words left. And I cannot think of any more words in my head. Don’t you think this blog is too long? It is too much for students to write 250 words everyday and it is way too much to write on Sundays. I am kind of sleepy right now after finishes my food. I guess I just go to bed again rather than finishing the blog. Oh wait a minute!! I just reached 250 words!!! Thanks god!!! People who don’t have much money or are not smart usually say that they are really poor. However, it is only an excuse. Many great men were not enough condition before they accomplished their dream. Genghis Khan who conquered much territories of the Eurasian Continent was good example.
He was born as son of chief of Mongolian tribe. However, he didn’t spend convenient childhood. His father was assassinated by other tribe. Also, he and his family were expelled from tribe. Moreover, Mongol was warring period at that time. Even children were killed if they were man. Genghis Khan also experienced many dangers. He lived as slave for a while. Warring period was very painful to child. However, he didn’t give up. He had dream to make country which people can sleep at night. Although he couldn’t know how to write and read, he knew how to survive from that period. His only ability was to lead others. As a result, his small tribe became biggest tribe in the Mongol. In fact, name of Mongol is originated from name of Mongol which was name of Genghis Khan’s tribe. Although he conflicts many barriers, he beat all of them by strong self-confidence and good judgment and successes to unify Mongol highland. Also, he conquered many strong empires which close to Mongol without satisfying present. His no giving up mental attitude made him emperor of the Eurasian Continent.
Although Genghis Khan didn’t have much estate or couldn’t know how to read and write, he accomplished his dream. If we didn’t give up though we face danger, anybody can accomplish dream.

In this blog, I am going to write about the school punishment to the students in my country, Korea. Unlike U.S., teachers in schools can punish their students by doing something bad. They hit the students’ hand, leg, and other parts with the stick. In the news on TV, some teachers punish their students by slapping their faces with hand. And some students suicided because they got too much punishments. While I lived in Korea until I graduated middle school, I experienced 9 years of the school life. I also got hit unexpected amount of time with the various kinds of sticks for 9 years. I cried a lot during my elementary school and sometimes I shouted to the teacher and got more punishment. I thought it was too much for the elementary kids and thought the punishment should not be happened in school. Maybe they think it is a great way to make children not to do the bad things. After I came to U.S., it was great that although the teachers get mad to their students sometimes, they never punished their students with actually hitting them. I was curious that why is it really different between Korea and U.S. Now I am old enough and there is no one who punishes me by hitting me. However, the little kids in Korea are still getting punished in school. I hope upper people make the rule to not hitting their students and deal with them something else, so these kinds of punishments do not happen anymore in the future.

When I was watching Battle Star Galactica (BSG), I thought it is one of the strange shows I watched in my life. It is mainly talking about the war between human and the robot which has the artificial intelligence. The robots are called Cylons and they are divided into centurions and cylons that look like human. In the first part of the story, it took a place in the meeting room where humans and cylons can negotiate. There was a man sitting in the desk and sleeping. Then a woman with two centurions came from the cylon’s side. She got close to the man and kissed him. When she was kissing him, the humans got attacked which was the part that confused me. For the main part of the story, the human society and the cylons were keeping fighting in the space. There was a military force and they were trying to protect the humans from the cylons. The cylons who looked like humans were living among the humans. Some cylons do not know that they are cylons and some fall in love with humans. The most part of the show was the fighting between humans and cylons. Although it was very interesting, I was really confused with this show and did not get exactly what it is about. I guess it is because I only watched half of the show and maybe I will understand the whole story at the time when I finished the show in the class. I hope we can finish it Tuesday and then I may write my blog without confusing.

For today’s blog, I am going to write about the 2010 Asian game. It is holding in Guangzhou right now. In the Asian game, there are 42 kinds of sports and 45 countries in Asia are participating to get the medals. As same as Olympic, there are 3 kinds of medals: Gold, Silver, and Bronze. It is good to get the gold medals rather than other two medals. However, it is important to do their best rather than only aiming for the gold medals. China is the strongest country in Asian game. They get almost half of the gold medals in Asian game. It may be because there are so many people in China. However, they are good because they do the training since they were young. In Korea, all males must have 2 years of the military service before the age of 30. And it is the biggest problem for the male sport players in Korea because almost all sport players can’t play well after 30. However, in Asian game, if someone gets the gold medal, then he does not have to take the military service. That is why the Asian game is so important for the male sport players in Korea. It is sad that not all of the sport players can get the duty of army off, but it motivates the players to do better than what they can do. I hope Korea does really well in this Asian game. Some may cry of what they get. However, it is important to do their best without regret.

In this blog, I’m going to write about cultural differences between Korean and American schools. I was born in America but lived in Korea. So when I came to America, I could know that American culture is very different from Korea. I was very surprised at that time. Especially, there were many differences between Korean and American schools.When I went to the Lafayette High School in Lexington, Kentucky, I found a lot of different things with Korea. I was very difficult to adjust to school at first time. When I adjust school, I could know that American schools are place for students. Not only school but also even teachers work for students.Going to the bathroom during class is a good example. When I was in Korea I couldn’t go to bathroom during class. I did not get the teacher asked for her permission. So when I go to the bathroom, was really hard. But in America, even in class, could go at any time if they get permission from the teacher. After teaching Korean students must be clean. Then I came to U.S. which was like heaven. I do not need clean the school, which was impossible in Korea(Clean after school everydayㅠㅠ) Third, many American schools are students of various races. In Korea, foreign non-Korean students, attend a foreign school normally. Lafayette High School was a typical high school, South Korea and, unlike many foreign students. Therefore, the school seemed to move away the racism almost which is a serious problem in America.

The issue of online copyright is fairly recent, and copyrighted in to YouTube is one of the matters of the current century. It is a controversial point between people who think that many websites, such as YouTube, are illegal, and the ones who think just the opposite, because they are users. The problem of YouTube is being discussed by different companies in the recent time. Google’s owner explained the cost of the lawsuit that YouTube is facing for infringing copyright material in the article “Copyright laws caught in the web,” (ABC Online.) YouTube must avoid uploading copyrighted material to the website, Viacom said. They also claim in the USA Today’s article “Viacom alleges YouTube copyright infringement,” that YouTube and others “has led to an explosion of copyright infringement.” This created a big argument among the members of YouTube and Viacom, the latter took the issue to the Court .The problematic discussion came up with a lawsuit where Viacom complains against the damages YouTube is causing to the company with the unauthorized viewing of its programs. Some examples are MTV, Comedy Central, The Daily Show with John Steward among others. Viacom’s main argument against YouTube, points out that the site “appropriates the value of creative content on a massive scale for YouTube’s benefit, without payment of license”. This clearly states that the website is going over the rules of intellectual property.
Despite all these judgments, YouTube has its defense. They say that Viacom’s argument not only judged and complained against them but also they are complaining against the Internet freedom which applies to all the exchange of information and communications ways among the internet. This is the statement that the research paper is trying to discover. It aims to figure out the limits of copyright law and what is illegal to do in the Internet and what is not. As it can be seen from the article “Copyright Laws caught in the web,” YouTube states that the company has agreements with content providers that allowed them to show legitimate copyrighted material while other videos in the site are protected by fair use.
Fair use it is similar to public domain, but it applies to copyrighted material, and means that everyone who uses copyrighted material must cite the source. YouTube also said that the site provides videos from amateur people who want to upload experiences or share them with others and the minority of the videos displayed in YouTube is not copyrighted. According to the definition of public domain, material that is not copyrighted can be available for anyone for free. However not all the information in the Internet is considered public domain, since a lot of it is copyrighted. The aim of these research papers is to explain the readers that sometimes people get confused about what applies for public domain and which are the laws for copyrighted material. People don’t really know that they have to cite videos taken from YouTube or even pay to have access to copyrighted material.

One of the well-known websites is YouTube. It allows people to broadcast their own videos and images and musical stuff. Some people upload videos such as movies, TV shows or anything that has a copyright without the permission of the owner. YouTube has been censured repeatedly for failing to monitor its online contents and to adhere to copyright laws. Copyright is a law to protect someone’s project, media work, writing or photographs. Nowadays with media and internet which gives free space to upload videos and music, people abuse copyrights of these media, whether they know it or not. However, some information in which material is considered to be public domain are thrown to public which are not owned or restricted by anyone. Therefore, any person can use it without mentioning the source anytime. On the other hand, people should be acknowledging the difference between the materials that are considered as a public domain and the materials should be cited because in each country has their own Public Domain, which is not the same in other countries. People opinions vary between one to another. Some think that all the materials online should be copyrighted even if it’s a public domain in YouTube. Most of the owners of the original videos ask for their rights from Google which owns the YouTube website. In YouTube’s defense, it is nearly impossible to monitor all of their members and to check all of the copyrighted materials. Piaget subdivided cognitive development into four stages; sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete operation, and formal operation. During the sensorimotor stage, from the birth to age of 2, I will allow the baby to touch, suck, and chew safe objects to get used to them. Throughout these activities, he can experiment with his surroundings, and develop his motor skills.
When a baby reaches the preoperational stage, which is 2 to 7 years of age, I’ll let them express the egocentrism in the beginning. It is a natural thing for a baby at this period. However, as they grow older, around 5 to 6 years old, I’ll teach them to leave the egocentrism and understand the view of other people. Also, children of this period used to fail conservation. It would be good if I could teach them about volume of liquids, using two different containers and pouring liquid from one to another. From this, he would learn the rule of conservation and reversibility. For a child in the concrete operational stage, which is 7 to 11 years of age, he will start having mental operations, such as logical, mathematical, and spatial problems. During this stage, I’ll focus on teaching them simple algebra and geometric problems. These problems could help them to improve logical, mathematical, spatial thought.The final stage is formal operational stage, which begins at about 11, he will now be able to think hypothetically and abstractly. I’ll provide many questions about “What if” and lead a child to bring out his own hypothesis. If he can’t get proper reasoning, I would teach him the basic background concept of the question, and train his operating ability related with hypothesis.

Based on my origin in East Asia compared with life in the United States, I think the major reasons for the obesity epidemic can be narrowed down to two reasons: diet and life style. First, the average diet of an American is heavier than other nations. A Majority of American dishes are fried dishes filled with oil and containing excessive salt and sugar. Compared to the American diet, dishes of other nations are usually boiled and use less oil. Also, their main dishes are less salty and contain less sugar. As everyone knows, oil, salt, and sugar are the major enemies of a healthy diet. However, it seems we are too used to our dishes and don’t recognized how heavy our foods are.
The second reason for obesity is our life style. In the other nations people walk to wherever they need to go. For example, a house wife in East Asia can go to the grocery store, bank, and hospitals simply by walking. They don’t need to drive, becausetheir nations are small, every necessity in their life is closely packed together, and pedestrian lanes and public transportation are well-organized. However, our nation isn’t designed like that. The United States has a vast landscape and everything is spread out. People need a ride for every single thing and we are too used to riding cars to walk.
As mentioned above, we consume highly heavy food but burn up less calories than the other nations. I believe these are why our nation is suffering from a critical obesity epidemic.

Attachment between parents and their children is critical in a child’s development and performance in later years. Depending on the attachment formed in early life, the life of a child could be changed dramatically. There were many ideas from students in class that could help to increase attachment. One person from the class said communication is the most important thing between a child and his or her parents. Another student said spending quality time with a child is most important. Also, the importance of the skin-contact has been mentioned. All of them are nice ways to increase attachment. However, these factors do not work independently, but are strongly correlated and function together. Also, all of them are equally important to creating a strong attachment. I experienced a similar childhood. After I entered school, I couldn’t have enough conversations with my parents. Both of my parents were diligent and motivated people, and never came back home till late evening. We didn’t have much time to talk during my middle school period, because of the rigorous educational condition of East Asia. Moreover, as I advanced farther in my education, I moved away from my family to study in US. Since then I have been live by myself and do not have chances to have deep conversations with my parents.
To increase attachment with a child, spending quality time with enough conversation is a basic necessity. Moreover, having adequate amount of skin-contact is important so that the child can make a social-emotional base with you.

The position of women in society has been increasing greatly since the early 20th century, and now it seems both sexes have equal opportunities and rights. In recent times, only a few stereotypes from the old days such as “women work in office” “women are worse drivers” ,“only women wear earrings” have survived. These cultural and social stereotypes are either almost completely removed from our society or still on processing. For example, it is pretty common that men wear earrings. Women work in the field, too.
However, there are still many subtle stereotypes lying beneath our society’s surface such that most people don’t even recognize them, and here are some examples;
Women are more emotional / Women are shop-a-holics / Men rarely make decisions based on feeling / Men work on one thing at a time, etc.
I don’t think there is very many things we can do for children to fix these subtle stereotypes. These examples are more than just cultural and social stereotypes. These are more likely the characteristics of each sex than stereotypes. Many of them are psychological characteristics with biological reasons in hormone levels, like depression in women during menses.
Also, in Korea, most of the women are controlling their husbands today… I do not know how this kind of problem happened. As a male, I think sometimes the husbands look poor. I do not even want males to control females. I just want males to have their right^^ I hope there are no more scary(?) wife in the families in Korea.

In this blog, I am going to write about the sex education. Most of the teenagers get the sex education in their school. However, I think sex education does not encourage teen pregnancy. To prove this point, I’ll first start by designing a test with defining variables. The independent variable would be receiving sex education and the dependent variable would be teen pregnancy. Since the result would not come out in a short time period, this study should be a longitudinal one. The picking of the sample should be done really carefully. First two different high schools with similar quality should be chosen. If both groups are from the same school, each group could influence the other one. Moreover, if the quality of each school is different, the result might be influenced because the environment of each group is not equal. Second, random sampling must be performed to pick 20~40 students, typical amount of a class, from each school. Freshmen would be ideal to see results. Third, sex education would be given for one group while the other group would not receive it. It would be best if the sex education were given constantly, maybe twice per every year. Then, the results will be observable at the end of students’ senior year.
As I mentioned, I expect that sex education does not encourage teen pregnancy. Since sex education could provide answers to questions of that teens may have and warn them of the importance of contraception, it would be truly beneficial for teens.

A long time ago, one of my teachers in middle-school said, “No matter what the circumstances, test scores never lie.” His point was that test scores are the most direct way to show one’s performance, and there is no easier way to visualize one’s ability. If you put in the effort, scores can never fail you. As he said, standardized tests might be the easiest way to show one’s performance and abilities. However, I don’t think it is fair to let these tests play a huge role in measuring someone’s worth, because many standardized tests are biased and only focusing on the level of education.
Standardized tests are not designed for every individual, but for an average portion of society. Also, sometimes they are biased on many things including culture. Therefore, these tests can’t measure either exceptional individuals or people from outside of society who are not familiar with local culture. Moreover, many standardized tests are mostly focused on measuring one’s level of education rather than one’s true potential. Sometimes, an individual’s talents can’t be measure as a score. However, because of this systemic problem, many gifted people are not spotted but instead buried.
To fix these problems, huge reforms on the current system of our society is needed. First, there should be more than a few types of exams so one’s potential is not mistakenly missed. Second, standardized tests should not be biased on certain things such as culture. Most importantly, tests shouldn’t focus on showing what level of education that individual has, but reflect more the true potential of a person.

At a certain point of marriage, a majority of couples have a baby (of course there are also many who get a baby accidently before marriage). However, being married doesn’t mean that he/she is automatically ready to take care of a baby, and this is one of the major problems facing today’s children.
Poor parenting is mostly because parents are uninformed. In many cases, they are still love their kids, but simply are ignorant about what’s the right thing to do for children. The best way to mitigate this problem is providing them with classes about how to take care of children, what’s good for them, and the righteous ways of parenting. This is the easiest case to mitigate, because as they still love their children but are simply uninformed, they would perform good parenting after the education.
Negative effects of divorce are a bit more difficult matter. Every organism is naturally selfish to survive. Since they have their own hardships and problems to deal with, parents can hardly take care of their children. I don’t think there is a best solution, but in my opinion, there should be support from both the family and social level. First, I know that they have a hard time too, but parents should put priority on their children, and try to provide adequate financial and emotional support. If there are relatives who can provide support, it would be better. Second, there should be a well-organized social support system such as custody parents or divorce mediation programs. Volunteers mostly provide current social support and organizations can’t support rapidly increasing divorce rates and millions of children who are currently suffering from the negative effects of divorce.
On the other hand, childhood abuse needs decisive measures, because it is unacceptable fault to abuse younglings, and a parent who has abused their children will highly abuse them again. There is no way to let these parents raise children, and we must deprive them of the right of custody, and take care of children in better places.

In this blog, I am going to write about the problems of Global Warming. It is one of the most important problems that human society is having right now. People are having their lifestyle with driving cars, using air conditioner, burning fossil fuels, and all other things are causing the global warming. With the atmosphere fading away the Sun's rays will get through easier and have more effect and the earth will get hotter and hotter and eventually it will be about 200 degrees in summers and 100 in winters and in about 300 years the world will get hot to the point it will blow up. We need the changes with our lifestyle that would not harm our environment. If changes are made, then we can reduce the effect of global warming in the future. Even though the changes are made, there should be some global warming. However, we can reduce it and make it better. If changes are not made by people the global warming will continue. The glaciers will all melt. The polar ice-caps will melt and the sea level will rise, which cause the island and coastal regions to be sinking. Also, because of these problems, the weather will become more extreme, with worse droughts and worse floods, and worse storms such as hurricanes. Moreover, there is the possibility that eventually the global temperature will become so high that human life will cease to be possible at all. So, even though we do not feel the problems right now, if we want to make our kids to live well in better condition, we should think about these problems.

Today, in our society, there are various kinds of organizations and most of the people are at least taking a part in the organization. Leader is the one who choose what the organization is going to do and take the responsibility of their members. And while the organizations are dealing with the problems, it is hard for everyone to be happy with what the organizations are doing. Some members may sacrifice for their organizations. Maybe sacrifice is not a right word to use in here. It sounds like the leaders damage the members on purpose. Some leaders have ambitions and do not care about their members no matter what. However, for others, they have belief that no one is hurt regardless of the situation. Rather they think that either all or none get equal amount of harm. In my opinion, for this topic, leaders should deal with the problems even though some members get damaged. Though, it is only for a goal to the whole organization get benefit. For the members who did not get any harm or only got benefits by their bosses’ decision, they will like their bosses. However, even though the bosses’ decision benefits the organizations, for the members who got harm even it is small amount number of people, they would not like their bosses. So, ‘Good boss’ does not mean ‘Good boss’ for everyone. Some people may say “He is the worst boss I ever met!” I hope you guys like your bosses~

In this blog, I'm going to write about the misunderstanding that Subway is having healthy food and McDonald's is having unhealthy food. In Subway, they have both the highest and lowest fat and calorie sandwiches in the fast-food industry. The six inch veggie delight has 230 calories and two and a half grams of fat, while the six inch meatball marinara with cheese sub has 580 calories and 23 grams of fat, (Subway). An option with the meatball sub is double meat and double cheese which adds another 900 calories, (Diet Success). The meatball marinara sub is also the leader in Trans fat, carbohydrates, dietary fiber, and sugars. The sub contains one gram of Trans fat, 70 grams of carbohydrates, nine grams of dietary fiber, and 16 grams of sugar, (Subway). The overall sandwich is loaded with calories but there are also numerous individual items on the menu that can add a lot of calories to any sandwich. According to Finance and Fat, the highest calorie breads at Subway are “Honey Oat and Italian Herbs and Cheeses at 250 calories per six inch sub.” Also, the cheese that contains the most calories is cheddar, which has 60 calories per 2 triangles. Even though subway advertises itself as being a healthy alternative, what is eaten has to be watched because just as many calories can be consumed in a six inch “healthy” sub as a Big Mac from McDonalds.
As we see, there are a lot of unhealthy fast foods in America. Even people eat only one; they can take almost all of the calories they need for a whole day. Also, those foods contain lots of fats and sodium which are not good for people’s health. However, Subway also has some meals with high calories. Even though it is not high as the least healthy meal in America, it is high enough for a one meal. So, if you chose Subway as a meal, I would like to recommend you to try real healthy meal, which has lower calories than others.

In this blog, I am going to discuss about bottled water and tap water. As we know, people use both bottled water and tap water in their life. While people usually use bottled water only for drinking, they use tap water for drinking, washing, and other stuffs. We can think that bottled water is same as tap water. However, bottled water is much cleaner than tap water. Even though both bottled water and tap water are sterilized, bottled water is filtered and purified for people to drink safely. Also, tap water comes through the pipe, and some pipes are really dirty. People should neither drink tap water nor using it for cooking. It is better for them to drink only bottled water or water from the filtering machine. In many areas of the world, such as Mexico, tap water is avoided because of the poor taste, and also because it is simply not safe. In these areas, bottled water is the only way that one can drink water. We have all heard the benefits of drinking water in general, and if you are in an area where the water tastes bad, or has been proven to be unhealthy, then bottled water may be your only source of drinking water. In many of these areas, soda is chosen over tap water. With the added caffeine and sugar included in sodas, bottled water is a much safer and healthier choice for a drink. Also, consider that bottled water is a convenient way to consume the daily requirement of water while working, as well as an excellent way to stay hydrated during walking, jogging, or working out. So, I recommend people to use bottled water for drinking and tap water for washing and dishing.

In a present, many people are getting tired about the crowed city life and dreaming to move to a small rural town. However, I prefer to live in a big city rather than a small town. Unlike a small town, metropolitan provides many opportunities and convenient life to its residents.
First of all, there are various convenient systems or infrastructures including public transportations, medical facilities, and more. By using the subway and city bus, people can quickly go to any destinations wherever they want by paying rational cost. Moreover, citizens can be favored by the medical care service at the nearest hospital in the situation of getting any injuries or diseases. Furthermore, it is easy to purchase various products or supplies in the mall at anytime. Compare to metropolitan, in small towns, people have to go to other cities to get high quality medical treatments and products, and even have to take long time to get there. However, metropolitans don’t have to waste their time. They can access to all of benefits immediately at where they live.
Second, there are more opportunities such as employment. Since the service industry is abundant and many companies are placing their headquarters and branches in cities, labor power and employees are always highly demanded. Moreover, as a city has more occupations in various fields, it is easier to find a job that individuals are looking for. For example, there is no or very limited demand on the jobs related with IT or computer engineering. Therefore, even if a member of small towns is fascinated about IT, it would be hard to find a proper job or to insure adequate income. However, comparing a small town or rural place, there are great amount of job opportunities related with those fields in a big city.
As it is mentioned above, metropolitan provides many benefits to its residents. It might be true that a big city has some negative factors such as pollution and high crime rate. However, still its numerous points provide benefits to comfort many people rather than exacerbate people’s life status.

Writing 250 words for blog everyday reminds me of 10 years ago when I was in elementary school. When I was in elementary school, I MUST write my diary everyday and turn it. So, the teacher can read and give me the feedback. However, for the very little kid, writing diary was too hard and did not want to write for everyday. I sometimes changed the date of the diary I wrote and turn it again for credit. It was not as long as 250 words, it was long enough for the elementary students to get bored. However, after I grew up, I was cleaning my room and found bunch of old stuffs of mine. And I found my diaries which I wrote when I was elementary school. It was more than 10 diaries and I was so surprised about the amount of diaries I wrote. I read most of them at the day I found. It was really funny to read the childish words I used. I forgot what happened at the time when I was in elementary school. And the diary reminds me of the old days. I am not sure that the blog we are writing are going to reminds me of old days like the diaries from elementary school. However, I think even though it is really bored to write 250 words for everyday for now, in the future, I am going to think that it was really good to write about blogs and make me to think about the class English 110!!!^^

Trick or Treat!!! It is Halloween!!!^^ It is a day for the kids to get candies and chocolates from adults. For the OSU student, while they are not kids anymore, I do not know they get the candies like the kids~~! For me, I only had Halloween once in my life because I was in Korea most of the time and we do not celebrate Halloween in Korea. However, it was really exciting to get the candies and chocolates with my friends and eat them. I cannot forget the day, running and smiling with my friends. Some adults did not give us the candies unexpectedly. However, we did not treat them badly because of not having the candies or chocolates. I guess “Trick or Treat” became a tradition and kids are not really treat adults because of not giving them the candies. Though, it is adult’s duty to purchase the candies and chocolates before Halloween and prepare to give it to kids. Also, for the kids, they should not eat all of the candies they got all at once. They may got toothache, which I got……ㅠㅠ. I hope Korea celebrates Halloween too, but it is now almost impossible to celebrate like U.S. does. I think there are Halloween parties in OSU today. I do not know I will participate the party or not, but I hope it is very exciting. Maybe I just visit the party and have some drinks!!^^ I hope you guys enjoy Halloween and have a great weekend!!

After finishing all my midterms and papers, I was going to rest for a whole day. However, something made me not to rest for a whole day, which is the BLOG. OH MY GOD!!! Why I have to do this thing in such a day like Saturday of the Midterm week??!!! I was asking god “Why are you doing this to me??” I think it is because he loves me too much! He can take care of the others for today and I want to take a break!! However, I woke up and I am writing by Blog 38 right now…ㅠㅠ There is nothing to write for today’s blog. My brain changed into a rock. And with my rock head, it is almost impossible to write 250 words for today’s blog. I guess everyone in our class think 250 words blog everyday is too much!!! While I put sprite into the fridge, I am out of time because I have to finish my blog before my sprite become ice!! I do not even know what I am writing about right now. I hope our clever teacher Ms. Chambers understands about my situation today. And I only reached 200 words right now… What should I write about remaining 50 words?? I asked my friend about it and he said “Shut Up!” and I said “OK.” So, I have to write something about ‘Shut Up.’ However while it is a bad word, it is not good to write a blog about it. For this blog, I am going to write about the people in North Korea who want to leave their country. As people in America know, North Korea has socialism and because of that people in North Korea want to escape from their country. There are many reason North Koreans to escape North Korea by crossing border. Main reasons are food shortage and human right violation. First, extreme poverty within the North Korea in general, and food shortage in particular, appear to have a significant impact on movement across border into China. North Korea already began to experience food shortage since early 1990s. North Korea had received economic benefits from the communist bloc but they couldn’t receive any more after collapse of Soviet Union. Disastrous floods and famine caused death of 600,000 North Koreans. It was 5 to 10% of North Korea’s population. Second, human rights are extremely abused by North Korea government for many years. For example, the North Korea government is denying political, civil and religious liberties of North Koreans. All of them are ruled by severe law and punishment of the North Korea government. Another example is existence of the severe concentration camp like hell. Estimated 150,000 to 200,000 inmates, including political prisoners are imprisoned there. According to witness of survivors and escapees, condition of the camp is very harsh and political prisoners can’t survive. After I heard this sad news about North Korea, I hoped they can at least come to South Korea and have their life with people in South Korea who can speak the same language and live much better than the North side.

When I was in elementary school in Korea, during summer break, I went to the leadership camp where it helps children to gain leadership. When I first heard from my parents that I have to go to the leadership camp, I was not happy because I wanted to play with my friends on vacation and do not want to do some kind of study. For the first few days in the camp, it was hard to listen to what teacher is talking about and try to play with nearby friends. However, after first few days, I was getting bored with playing with friends. Then I tried to listen to the teacher. While the teacher is teaching to the little kids, he tried to make the speech funny as much as possible. The teacher mentioned that it is important to gain leadership from when we are young. When we become adults, then the leadership we are having will help us to live well in our society. He also mentioned that when we become leaders in society later, it is important to take care of the other people and try to work for them. After the speech, we practiced to have the leadership. We had to make the speech ourselves and talked about it in front of everyone. I was not sure it really helped us at that time. However, I think at least it calmed me down when I talk in front of many people. So, I think even though the kids do not like the leadership camp and just want to play, I recommend to parent that their children need to gain leadership from when they are young.

I read an article about people getting fat. In the part where it mentioned school is worse than the fast food places, I was thinking how can the place like school, that always has to give good things to the students can be worse than fast food restaurants. The article said that 60% of schools do not offer fresh foods. Of course the children will like the fast foods served in the school. However, while it is unhealthy, the schools need to give the children the fresh foods rather than what the children want. Also, the article describes that 83% of high schools and 67% of middle school now have contracts with a soft drink manufacturer. And most of the schools get benefit by offering the soft drink. I think soft drink is worse than the fast foods. While children keep drink the soft drink, it is hard to drink water because their tongue got adapted to the soft drink. Then, they are going to keep drinking the soft drink and eat the fast foods with them which is very unhealthy for little kids. I know that the schools want to get profit as much as they can. However, is it really good to get profit by making the children unhealthy? They should know what is really important for the children for the first place. For this kind of situation, we have to make a rule that the schools should not offer the fast foods and soft drinks to the children. Children are the most important people who will grow up and make the country stronger. So, it is adult’s work to keep the children healthy.

The topic I am going to write about my Common Place paper is about “Is it okay for the leaders to sacrifice their members to manage the organization?” Today, there are leaders who have many employees and have to deal with many problems with them. While they are dealing with many problems, there are times when someone gets damage by make the work success. In big and small organization, almost all of them have some troubles while managing. It is good if all of the members are happy by dealing with the problems. However, most of the time, there are people who do not like the situations they are facing. For example, people think Barak Obama, the president of United States, is a person who represents the whole country. People trust him and agree about what he is doing. While the president is the leader of the whole country, he should take care of the important works. So, while he has to think about the bigger problems, not everyone will be satisfied with what he is doing. However, if he think about everyone’s arguments, then it is impossible to work as a president of a country that has more than 300 million people. For this way, it is not like someone is sacrificing for the leader. However, the things just do not go as what they want. I was wondering is it really okay that at least some people should get damage by working for their organization. Although the leader did not mean to do that, the members have dissatisfaction with it. I hope leaders know about this problem and deal with them for the better situation.

For this blog, I am going to write about the Evolution of human. Humans were evolving for a long time and reach today’s form. And people are wondering about “Are we still evolving?” We have to think about the meaning of Evolution. Evolution is the changing of characteristics that fit to the certain environment. In the past, there were no TV, cars, computer, etc. Humans had to move themselves and hunt animals to survive. So, brain evolved to make the tools and body evolved to use them. And while humans evolve, they form a comfortable environment to survive. Today, we are living in very comfortable circumstances. By these kinds of circumstances, humans might not need Evolution. However, Evolution does not stop even if people want to stop it. Comfortable environment does not mean humans stop their evolution. While it is too comfortable, humans do not move as they did before and rely on the tools. Evolution occurs in this situation. People are getting fat and lose their exercise capacity. Also, while we have air conditioner which controls the temperature, humans may lose their furs which cause them to bear the changes in temperature. Moreover, in the future, we may have only one finger because people may be doing everything by clicking buttons of controller. We can call this an Evolution, but also call this Atrophy. So, humans are still evolving today by losing their abilities to do their works. If humans want not to evolve in this way, they should not feel comfortable about the situation they are having and try to work to evolve for the better ways.

I’m going to write about the people who believe religion and people who believe science. Many people believe in religion. Almost of civil wars in the world arose from conflict between religions. Religion is very important like this. People usually try to feel rest in their mind through religion. Moreover, people before Modern Ages believe in religion passionately than now. They thought that God created human. However, an English naturalist, Charles Darwin wrote a book “On the Origin of Species” This book included his opinion which human is not created by God. Human has evolved themselves from monkey. Of course, many religionists criticized him. One pedometer newspaper at that time put a picture which drew Darwin as monkey. When he died, he said that On the Origin of Species was wrong. However, it was not his right mind. He had to say inevitably because he was common naturalist who couldn’t stand against powerful religious world. Although his claim was criticized at that time, it started to be accepted and learned by many people since modern ages began. Even common people who don’t have interest on science know that human has evolved from monkey. However, strict religionists still don’t agree his claim. They believe that human was created by God. As a result, religionists often conflict with scientists. This conflict still continued. What is the method to solve this conflict? Religion is very important which can’t be touched easily. People have depended on religion from a very long time ago. It’s not easy to change their sense of value. Scientist and religionist should have more meetings than now. Of course, the first time is very difficult. However, if they talk slowly and carefully, they will find answer to understand each other. Any problems are not solved without talking. Scientists have to show evidence which human has evolved from a long time ago and religionists have to make scientist don’t forget existence of God through meeting. I also agree that if people forget existence of God, it also causes trouble. Their role is to control faults of each side.

Today on my blog, I am going to write about my thinking about the balance of society in Korea. In Korea, boys in my age are divided into two different groups: boys who have a girl friend and who do not. The boys in the group who do not have a girlfriend are arguing why they do not have a girlfriend. They excuse and console themselves by they do not need a girlfriend and they are only enjoying the free time. However, the worse thing is some of the people who have a girlfriend are talking to their girlfriend with oily voice in front of the people who do not have a girlfriend. So, people who do not have a girlfriend are blaming the people who have a girlfriend and once again crying about not having a girlfriend. Then, they are blaming their parents by not giving them the abilities to get the girlfriend and arguing that our society is unfair. However, I think it is fair enough. The fairness comes from the balancing of existence of people who have a girlfriend and people who do not. People who have a girlfriend are boasting themselves by having a girlfriend to people who do not. Then, people who do not have a girlfriend are blaming people who have a girlfriend and say they are jerks. Although these are totally different situations, by existence of these two situations, it balances our society. I told to someone about this, and he said “We don’t need this kind of balance.” As you think, he does not have a girlfriend. Even though I do not have a girlfriend, I am just writing about this because I have to recognize my situation and try hard to join the group who has a girlfriend.

In this blog, I am going to write about my life during the summer break. During summer, I went to my home country, South Korea, to see my family and friends. For the first few days, I visited my grandparents, cousins, and meet my friends. I ate lots of Korean foods which I cannot eat in America. It was very exciting to meet people and play for the first few weeks. Also, there was the World Cup started when I just got back to Korea. It was very excited to cheer my national team with other people. However, while the vacation is more than 3 months, there were not many things to do after the first few weeks. When I was about to get bored, my cousins were done with their college and about to start their vacations. Even though OSU starts summer vacation later than other colleges in United States, most of the colleges in Korea start the vacation at the end of June. While we were all living in Daejeon, the city in the middle part of Korea, we went to Busan, the city in the bottom part of Korea, for travel. It was good that all 6 of my cousins are male, but it was also sad that it was all boys. We had a great time by eating fresh foods and went to the biggest department store in the world. After the travel, the time went really fast. I took the most time in Korea by studying about my major. It was very tired to study during summer break. However, I think I had a great vacation.

In my paper, I am writing about Malcolm’s decision as a leader. In Firefly episode 8 ‘Out of Gas’, in the scene after an explosion, when Malcolm tried to stay in the shuttle alone, Inara asked him to leave the shuttle with the members. Malcolm only told the crew members to leave and did not give any advice that what they have to do after leaving. So, Inara thought if Malcolm is a leader of the crew, he should come with them and tell them what to do for the situations they will face. Mal might think he is sacrificing himself into the dangerous situation to protect the members, so he just made the members to leave the shuttle. For that scene, I was thinking while Malcolm looks like a good leader who is sacrificing to protect the members, he is not an appropriate leader because he did not think about what the members have to do after leaving the shuttle. As a leader of the crew, it is good that he is thinking about his members and tries to sacrifice for them. However, as Inara mentioned the leader of the crew should take care of the members until they are safe. Also, by loosing their leader and do not know what to do, they may get panic. My thinking about Malcolm is that he is not yet an appropriate leader for the crew. I want to get feedback about is Malcolm is an appropriat leader or not. Also, what he has to do when Inara told him to leave the shuttle with the members.

2010 World Cup held in South Africa this summer. 32 countries were playing to get the World Cup trophy. Although Spain got the trophy and others got knocked out, all teams were playing hard and people are proud of their national teams. My country, Korea Republic, was involved in 32 countries that played in 2010 World Cup. Korea was in group B and had to play against Argentina, Greece, and Nigeria. All of these teams were in higher rank in FIFA ranking. While only two teams could go to the next round, it was really hard group for Korea. Most of the experts in soccer thought that Korea will finish lasting in the group. However, Koreans thought this year’s Korea national team is better than any other Korea national teams before. For the first match against Greece, Korea won 2 to 0. People in the world were surprising of Korea’s victory. However, the important match was the second match against Argentina. Their offensive squad was the best in the world. They had Lionel Messi, the best player in the world, with Gonzalo Higuain and Carlos Tevez. Korea lost 4 to 1 by them poorly. The opportunity to go to the next round goes to the match against Nigeria. Korea had to at least draw to them to go to the next round. When Nigeria scored first, people thought that Nigeria will go to the next round. However, Korea scored 2 goals right after Nigeria scored. Although Nigeria scored one more goal after that, the game drew by 2 to 2 and Korea went to the next round. It was the first time that Korea went to the second round outside Korea. Although Korea lost to Uruguay in the second round, koreans will not forget about the team Korea in 2010 World Cup.

As I mentioned in my last blog, I am going to write some more about soccer. In this blog, I will write about the A Match. A Match stands for a match between countries. Even though all of the players have their club teams, they should play for their countries. Players are proud to play for their countries even though they do not get paid for playing for their countries. There are two kinds of A Matches: Friendly matches and matches for the tournament. Friendly match is a match between countries which two countries appointed to have a match. Match for the tournament is also an A Match. However, it is for the competition. There are lots of competitions for A Matches. But, the most popular competition is the World Cup. Almost all countries are playing for the World Cup, the largest sport festival in the world. Only 32 countries can play in the World Cup. So countries are divided to continents and playing to get the assigned tickets for the continent. When all of 32 countries are selected for the World Cup, then there is a draw for the group in December, a year before the World Cup. World Cup is holding in even year between two Olympics in the summer. There are 8 groups of 4 countries and only 2 countries can join for the next round. Then, it changes to knock out stage until the final match. For the next blog, I will write about 2010 World Cup and my country, Korea.

In this blog, I am going to write about soccer, which is football. People in U.S. do not know very well about soccer. They are more interested in American Football and Baseball that not many countries are playing. However, soccer is the most popular sport in the world. More than 200 countries are joined as a member of FIFA (Federation of International Football Association). And Europe is where soccer is most popular. All of the countries in Europe have their own soccer league and lots of people support their teams. Three biggest soccer leagues are Premier League (England), Primera Liga (Spain), and Serie A (Italy). Supporters for these leagues are having proud for their teams. They are watching every single game that their teams playing and support them. Top rankers in the leagues are qualified to join UEFA Champions League, which is the league of Europe. Teams are playing to get the trophy which is the great honor for them with an unexpected amount of prize money. When the season is off, transfer market is open. Most of the teams are looking for good players and bring them with paying transfer fee to the teams that are having good players. In 2009, Real Madrid paid a transfer fee of 80 million pounds, about 150 million dollars, to Manchester United to bring Cristiano Ronaldo to the team. Teams may be selling their players because they have debt or to get money to buy the players they are looking for. For the next blog, I am going to write more about soccer by introducing A match and World Cup.

In this blog, I'm going to wright about the rights of human.Human right is most basic thing to human. However, people in some of nations still live like slave or animal. Especially, life of people in North Korea is typical example. North Korea is a Communist country which is ruled by dictator, Kim Jong-Il. However, his ruling made almost of most North Koreans are painfully. Many North Koreans are suffering starvation and poverty so they try to escape for their life. I’m going to introduce below journals and report which I searched about North Korean refugees how their life is miserable.
In the journal “Tributional for North Korea” by Suzanne Scholte, she is claiming that North Korea Government should be punished after collapse of the regime. She gave typical example how North Korea government is evil. According to her example, North Korean mother and daughter who escaped to China were separated. Mother tried to search her daughter best. However, she heard terrible story. Chinese security agents had forced the daughter back to North Korea. The North Korean border guards who arrested her beat 14-year-old girl to death. Not only this mother and daughter but also the other North Korean refugees suffered this kind of terrible experiences. She said that all of people in the South Korea have interest about human rights of North Koreans. It is very sad that while South Korea is right next to North Korea that uses the same language as ours, we cannot do anything. I hope Korea unify as soon as possible.

In this blog, I’m going to write about one of the problems in society. Today, there are many problems in the society. Bullying is one of them. However, people do not recognize how serious bullying is. What is bullying? It is a special form of aggressive behavior when someone is subjected to negative actions on the part of one or more other people, repeatedly
Bullying arose from social problem. People who lead to bully had poor environment like family and childhood. If they did not have a good and happy childhood, their characteristics went from bad to worse. For example, if they did not receive love from parents, they show their anger against their parents by bullying others. Poor environment social problem causes another social problem, which is bullying.
If bullying arises from social problem, it also causes another problem. Feelings like uneasiness, depression, and delusions of persecution are good example. High school student who suffered from these symptoms said that he was bullied by his classmates in school because of his personality and face. He could not bear it so he refused to go to school or even talk with anybody. As a result, he even started to say that he wanted to die. It is common symptom not only him but also others who suffered bullying before.
In conclusion, bullying is one of the most serious social problems. All of people in our society should have interest and recognize about bullying. Bullying already becomes social problem. People have to stop bullying others. They have to calm down when they’re angry. If they just be little more calm, then the society will be better.

I thought about ‘what if I ate the blue pill’. In the movie ‘THE MATRIX’, Neo has to make a choice. In order to remain in the digital world, he has to eat the blue pill, and if he wants to know the truth, he has to eat the red pill. Neo eats the red pill to know what the real world is like.
There would be many possibilities according to the circumstances, if I were Neo, I mean, if I were on his circumstances, I would eat the red pill, because Neo kept wondering what the matrix was, and he also felt that the world he lived (the digital world) was not quite right. And he was curious who the Morphius was. In other words, he needed a whole new life.
But if I, right now, have to make choice, I think I will eat the blue pill. I think I’m well tamed to this world. Maybe I did adapt well to this social system.
Neo took his path with his own mind. But for me, I was trained in school, to adapt well in society. Country also wants its citizens to be in calm situation. Also, my senses are hard to ignore. I see, listen, feel, and think and they are really hard that the world I live in is not actually real.
Humans have been resisting to the nature, adapted, and evolved in order to make quick move to changes. But I think, by making society and social system, humans became less sensitive to the change of the thinking.

Today, after the class, I was thinking about the thesis of ARP second draft. I don’t think that my thesis is totally wrong. If I change it a little bit, then it might be a strong argument which connects to a real world. My thesis was about the leader. Today, there are many kinds of groups and organizations in the world. And almost all of the groups have their leaders. However, not all of them have good leaders. In firefly episode 8 ‘Out of Gas’, the crew members were having a trouble by the explosion in the engine room. The crew members were getting scared. Then, Mal decided to sacrifice himself to save the crew members. He made the members to leave the shuttle except him. Mal tried to get help from someone but he got injured by the people who tried to steal cargoes from Serenity. However, Mal did not make them to steal the crew member’s products and make them to leave the Serenity. It was very important moment in the episode. While Mal was injured, it was really dangerous to do something with his body. However, as a leader of the Serenity, he moved his body to protect the Serenity. These days, it is not very often for the leaders in society to get injured while protecting the members of their organizations. However, the good leaders are always going with the danger when they work for the members. They take the responsibility while working with members. So, if people have their leaders who always think about them and work for them, then they are having good leaders.

I'm going to write some more about china for this blog. Which country will become most powerful country in the world? It may be China. Recently, China showed amazing and frightened development in many parts including economy. Many people are thinking that China will become new rival of United States instead of formal Soviet Union. As result, China starts to show their power in the world. However, China is also suffering internal problems. The most serious internal problem is ethnic problem. Fifty five groups of people exist in China. The group of people which is called a Han holds the largest population among them. Although Han people hold the largest population and long history, the other groups of people also have their own culture and history. It is lie if China doesn’t have cultural problems between each group of people. The group of people claims their right of self-government in China to Chinese Government. Some of them claim independence. Tibet and Uighur are famous group which claims independence from China. However, Chinese Government didn’t allow their claim. On the contrary, they sent military to suppress. As a result, many Tibetans and Uighur people died and the leader Dalai Lama who claimed independence of Tibet escaped to India. Also, Chinese Government sent many Han Chinese to Tibet and Uighur. Han Chinese who lived in Tibet and Uighur opposed to independence from China because of this policy. I understand situation of China. It was common problem of multiracial country. If Chinese Government allows their independence, the other groups of people also claim independence. If it will be continued, China will be collapsed. It is why China can’t allow independence of other groups. If China can’t solve this problem, it will be biggest problem to bother development of China forever.

Which country show most development in the world? It is a China. Nobody say no about that answer. Even the most powerful country, U.S., also thinks that China will be their rival of future instead of former Soviet Union which is disappeared. Many countries are also studying about development of China for last 30 years. Clearly, China showed wonderful development for last 30 years. However, China was the target of ridicule by Western countries before they show their power now. Many scholars in Western described that China is not powerful although they have huge territories. In addition, they also described that Chinese is foolish people to be unchanged anything for a long time. Why China became target of ridicule through they have long history and wonderful culture. I learned that China was the land of dreams by Europeans for a long time. For example, many Europeans tried to trade with China through Silk Road which exist rugged mountain and desert. Marco Polo who wrote Books of the Marvels of the World was also one of them. He wrote that book after that travel. The Napoleon who was famous general and emperor of France also described China as “Sleeping lion”. However, China was beaten by small military of Britain in Opium War their sense of sight was changed. The China which was beaten by small Western countries was not respective country anymore. However, it was their outward appearance. China didn’t have war before they fought with Western and enjoyed peace. On the other hand, Western suffered too many changes and revolutions. It was obvious that China couldn’t win Western. However, today’s China is different. China suffered many changes and revolutions after for 100 years and at last they are showing amazing development. I also believe that China will become most powerful country in the world. However, I worry about my country, Korea. Korea is located next to China. Korea and China always had conflicts in history. If China has power, Korea will face difficult and dangerous situation. Thus, the development of China is amazing and dangerous.

In state of Florida, people had meeting to burn Koran. What is Koran? Koran is bible in Islam. It is very holiness book in Islam. I don’t know why people in Florida tried to burn it. I heard that they burn it because of 9/11 terror which occurred 9 years ago. They seem to show their anger by burning Koran which is holiness bible of Islam. However, it was wrong. Why they have to revenge by burning Koran? In this situation, it caused more conflicts between Islam countries. In addition, U.S. sent military to Iraq and Afghanistan. If Muslim hears this news, they also become angry. As a result, common people who are working in Middle East will suffer trouble. Nobody want to conflict. However, people always cause and suffer conflict. Why they don’t try to understand each other? I know it is useless question. All of religions in the world teach love and peace. However, we don’t follow it. People always tried to follow teach of God but they always cause wrong things like conflict. This meeting is also one of them. Jesus also doesn’t want Christians have trouble with although their enemy is non-Christians. I also learned that Christian and Muslim were created from same root. How silly it is. I know that things which always bother peace are small of fools. Do people in Florida really want to become this kind of fools? I want that they look again their acting and think our future. It is my wish for our world.

Today, I read an article about North Korea. While I am a South Korean, I would like to find about the North Korea. Recently, North Korea seems to suffer political change. The leader of North Korea, Kim Jung-Il conferred title of general to his son, Kim Jung-wun. The countries like South Korea, Japan, and China consider that Kim Jung-wun become successor of his father and would be next leader of North Korea. If their thought will be true, North Korea transmits from generation to generation again. His father, Kim Jung-Il already received power from his father, Kim Il-sung. How silly it is. Is North Korea really a Communist country? No, they are not. It is kingdom. I don’t know why they are using title of democracy and communism. Any communist countries didn’t allow this kind of silly thing. However, North Korea succeeded already two times. I don’t understand how they can keep their nation. Also, they don’t have interest about people in North Korea. Many North Korean people are suffering starvation so their average height is too small. Many problems exist except starvation but nobody in North Korea can complain. If they do, they would be sent to horrible prison. North Korean Government entirely pressures to obey. Many North Koreans who escaped North Korea said that North Korea is like hell in the world which people cannot live. How about Kim Jung-wun? If he will become leader, North Korea is better than before or not? The answer is not. He is also focusing to keep his power in North Korea. The future of North Korea is transparent. This kind of country has to be destroyed

It is kind of hard to decide what I am going to write about my first draft of ARP. The main point for choosing an episode is that how I understand the episode and make sure that there is a good thesis I can write with the episode. I think that I have to choose one of the episodes in Firefly. Because it is the only series that I watched and I understand the most of the episodes. And I am going to do Firefly episode 8 ‘Out of Gas’. While I watched almost all of the episodes of Firefly, I think episode 8 was most impressive. The scene that Mal tried to protect the crew members was fantastic. I thought that I can use this scene and use it as my first draft. My thesis should be “Mal Sacrificing himself to save the crew members as a leader shows us true leaders in society endure the danger in order to protect the members”. I might change the thesis little bit, but the thesis is something like this for my first draft. I can connect this part to real world connection and write more about it. I think it is hard to be a good leaders like Mal. There are many kinds of leaders in the world. Some are leaders of small groups and some are leaders of large groups. However, not all of them are leaders who sacrifice himself for the others. There are more who get whatever they want to get. So, it is important to meet a good leader of the society you are in or to be a good leader.

Firefly episode 14 ‘Objects in Space’, is about River saving the crew and get’s the crew’s trust. In the first part of the episode, there were some problems between River and the crew members. River was holding a stick. However, the crew members thought that she is holding a gun. They were discussing about how to treat River. Simon was telling that River will not harm anyone and she does not know how to shoot a gun. However, Kaylee was arguing that she shoot 3 people before to rescue Mal. Then, they were about to ask River and Simon to leave the Serenity for crew member’s safe. That night, a ship came to Serenity and a man called Jubal Early entered the Serenity. He tied Kaylee and found Simon. He pointed Simon with a gun and made him to find River. However, they could not bind River easily. So, they broadcast to the ship and tried to make River hear that if she does not come, then he will shot Simon. By this broadcast, crew members woke up and tried to make a plan with River to save Simon. River went to the Early’s ship because she thought that the crew members do not need her and it will be alright to go with Early. Simon tried to attack Early, but he got shot in his leg. However, Mal attacked Early and made him to go away which was part of the plan they planned earlier. River got back to the Serenity and now everyone in the crew believes River. I think Early was a good guy that helped River to solve her problem with the crew members.

Firefly episode 5 ‘Safe’ is the most exciting episode in the series to me. This episode is about Simon and River got kidnapped. After Serenity arrived in some kind of town to deliver the cargo. Then Simon and River went to the town and have some fun. Simon was watching River for her safe. However, Simon ran away because of some kind of planets he dislikes. When Simon realized the situation, River disappeared. He tracked River and she went to the festival. When they were enjoying the festival, a settler kidnapped Simon. Then River followed him, so he kidnapped her too. Simon and River believed that the crew will rescue them. However, there was a fight between the Sheriff and the buyer and Book got shot. So, while the crew members were trying to save Book, they were forgetting about Simon And River. Simon realized that the settlers kidnapped them because they need a doctor. However, River was treated as a witch and the village tries to burn her. Simon tries to stop them but it was impossible to stop the ones like them. Then the Serenity came and rescued Simon and River. After they came into the ship, Mal told them that they are the part of the crew. It was the most impressive part of the story that I was almost about to cry. In this episode, I could see Simon’s love for his sister, River. He tried hard to rescue his sister. Also, I think now Simon and River know that the crew members think them as members not as a storage. I thinkg if people see this episode, there will be some people who is going to cry.

The story in Firefly episode 12 ‘Message’, was about the Mal and Zoe’s war comrade from the past. When Serenity visited the trading post to get the mail or package. Jayne got a hat from his mom that she knitted herself.. However, Mal and Joe got a package that they did not expected to get which is the corpse of their comrade, Tracey. After they took the body to Serenity, they heard the message from Tracey that someone is going to kill him and requested to Mal and Zoe that if he dies, then give his body to his parents. The crew members agreed to follow Tracey’s last wish. However, an alliance came and asks for Tracey’s body. Mal was curious about why the alliance needs his body. So, he tried to find an item from Tracey. Then, Traycey alived and told that he took a drug to make him looks like he was dead. He said he was changing his original organs to new ones. I was curious why he was changing his organs and give the old one to someone. He could just give the other organs to the buyer. However, Womack, who tries to find Tracey, attacked Serenity to get Tracey. While the attack was very powerful, Book suggested to Mal to Surrender and give Tracey to Womack. Then Tracy grabed a gun and pointed to the crew members because he thought they were going to give him to Womack. Mal tried to make him to surrender. However, after he realized that it was possible to calm Tracey down, Mal shooted him. While Tracey was dying, he realized that Mal was not going to give him to Womack and appolized for his rude action. Then the episode ends. This episode was kind of confused of Tracey’s dead. I thought there’s a way for Tracey to survive. It was kind of sad story that Tracey died.

In this blog, I am going to write about Firefly episode 4 ‘Shinding’. After serenity returned to Persphone, Inara was employed by a rich man called Atherton Wing and she was going to go to the party with him. However, Badger, the crimal, had a job for Mal which needs Mal to get close to the noble and make him to hire Mal. Mal thought that it is good to attend the party, so he bought Kaylee a dress and tried to go a party with her. However, Inara was also in the party with Atherton. He asked Inara to stay Persphone for him. But, when Mal came and Atherton saw Inara and Mal were so friendly, he became jealous. Then he said some unexpected words that he did not try to say to Inara. Then Mal punched Atherton and tried to have a fight next morning with the sword. Sir Harrow, the noble Mal tried to meet, volunteered to be Mal’s second for the fight. When they had the match in the morning, Mal was attacked by Atherton and became a bad position. However, Inara told him if he does not kill Mal, then she will stay with him. Then, Mal managed to put a sword at Atherton’s neck. He could kill him, but he did not. After the match, Sir Harrow told Mal that he will hire Mal. In this episode, while Mal’s goal was to hired by Sir Harrow. However, it was more focused on the fight between Mal and Atherton. I was kind of confused about this episode because it was not very fluent. I hope the other episodes are better than this episode. The fight was kind of funny and impressive anyway.

Firefly episode 6 ‘Our Mrs. Reynolds’ was kind of funny episode with Mal getting a wife. After the Serenity finished their mission in a small town, the town made a party for the Serenity. While they were drinking and enjoy the party, a young woman gave Mal a flower headband and some wine. In the morning after the night of the party, the crew were trying to leave the town. However, the young woman, called Saffron, who gave wine to Mal claimed that she is Mal’s wife who’s also a gift from the people from the town. While Mal did not rember about the marriage, he thought that this is kind of trick from Saffron. The interesting part was the crew members were celebrating Mal’s marriage without a doubt. They did not have any comment about who the woman is and why she wanted to marry with Mal. However, as Mal thought, Saffron did not marry Mal because she liked him. When Saffron kissed Mal at night, Mal got drugged because there was something on her lips. After shaffron went to the bridge and leave the shuttle, there was also a funny part. When Inara came to Mal and thought he was dead. Then she kissed Mal and realized that he is alive. However it was too late because she was also drugged by something that drugged Mal by his lip. After they woke up, they went to Saffron and get their shuttle back. Saffron was doing all those thing because she wanted to change their direction. The thing is I could not understand this episode perfectly. However, I think this episode was made for fun. It was kind of impressive story which can make the audience to keep watch the series.
