In my paper, I am writing about Malcolm’s decision as a leader. In Firefly episode 8 ‘Out of Gas’, in the scene after an explosion, when Malcolm tried to stay in the shuttle alone, Inara asked him to leave the shuttle with the members. Malcolm only told the crew members to leave and did not give any advice that what they have to do after leaving. So, Inara thought if Malcolm is a leader of the crew, he should come with them and tell them what to do for the situations they will face. Mal might think he is sacrificing himself into the dangerous situation to protect the members, so he just made the members to leave the shuttle. For that scene, I was thinking while Malcolm looks like a good leader who is sacrificing to protect the members, he is not an appropriate leader because he did not think about what the members have to do after leaving the shuttle. As a leader of the crew, it is good that he is thinking about his members and tries to sacrifice for them. However, as Inara mentioned the leader of the crew should take care of the members until they are safe. Also, by loosing their leader and do not know what to do, they may get panic. My thinking about Malcolm is that he is not yet an appropriate leader for the crew. I want to get feedback about is Malcolm is an appropriat leader or not. Also, what he has to do when Inara told him to leave the shuttle with the members.

I dont really think he was sacrificing anything by staying on the ship. It seems like he is doing a noble thing by staying but i think the only reason why he stayed was to protect the ship. If he would have left it the ship could have been destroyed or something so I think he would rather risk his life rather than lose his ship. I think he would rather die than to lose his material possessions.
ReplyDeleteMal is not very level-headed and does not think clearly sometimes. He did not stay with his crew to assure their safety yet he did try to sacrifice for them, which is a very noble thing to do. I think he wants to be a good captain, his thought process just clashes slightly with the job title. Overall I think he is a decent leader.
ReplyDeleteI also thought about it for the first place. Malcolm might thought that the ship is more important than himself. However, I think as a leader, he should stay with the members.
